Snaking out the main sewer line is another method used in plumbing to clear blockages and clogs, particularly in larger pipes that make up the main sewage system of a building or home. Here is how it typically works:
Assessment: Just like with hydro jetting, the plumber will first assess the situation to determine the start location and possible nature of the blockage. This is based on the visual problem noticed and the layout of the property.
Preparation: The plumber/ drain cleaner will prepare the area by setting up equipment and accessing the main sewer line. This may involve removing a cleanout cover, toilet or pipe to access the sewer line.
Using the snake: A plumbing snake, also known as an auger, is a long, flexible cable with a variety of tips. The plumber inserts the snake into the main sewer line through the access point and feeds it through the pipe until it reaches the blockage.
Breaking up the blockage: Once the snake reaches the blockage, the plumber uses it to break up the obstruction by rotating it and applying pressure. The blade or tip helps to bore through and grab the debris, allowing the plumber to clear the clogged drain and possibly bring back evidence of the cause.
Removing the debris: As the blockage is broken up, the plumber may flush out of the sewer line with water.
Repeat if necessary: In cases of particularly stubborn blockages, the process may need to be repeated multiple times to completely clear the sewer line.
Inspection: After snaking out the main sewer line, the plumber may suggest a camera, a maintenance schedule or a hydro jet.
Snaking is a tried-and-true method for clearing blockages in sewer lines and is often effective for dealing with common issues like tree root intrusion, grease buildup, and solid obstructions. However, it may not be as thorough as hydro jetting since it primarily focuses on breaking up and removing the blockage rather than cleaning the entire pipe. Additionally, snaking may not be suitable for all types of blockages such as grease and bellies.
